Rude, raucous and very silly, action comedy 30 Minutes or Less stars Jesse Eisenberg as pot-smoking slacker Nick, a small-town pizza delivery guy who falls foul of a pair of would-be criminal masterminds.
Half-smart blowhard Dwayne (Danny McBride) and his put-upon sidekick Travis (Nick Swardson) are looking for money to hire a hit-man to kill Dwayne’s domineering father (Fred Ward), so they nab Nick, strap a home-made bomb to his chest and give him nine hours to rob a local bank before it explodes. With the clock ticking, Nick recruits his best friend (Aziz Ansari) to try to get him out of the jam.
30 Minutes or Less is almost as dumb as its wannabe criminal geniuses, but the film barrels along at such a pace – spraying expletives as it goes – that it doesn’t matter that the plot is as battered as Nick’s Mustang. Besides, directed with zip by Zombieland filmmaker Ruben Fleischer, the film only last 83 minutes, barely long enough for Nick to deliver three pizzas. With plenty of laugh-out loud gags along the way – including a nifty in-joke about Facebook at the expense of Eisenberg’s Social Network role – there won’t be many viewers asking for a refund.
